Old Boy Plot Explanation Please *Spoilers* (hopefully)

Sat through this a couple of months ago, lost interest very quickly although the i did occasionally look over the top of my Beano to see what might be going on.
Please would someone give me a brief rundown on what was going on to save me doing the same again. So many people think so highly of the film i would just like to know what happened.
Was his girlfriend his daughter or something?

Trivia

* The squid being eaten alive was no special effect but a real squid; several had to be sacrificed during the making of the movie. Actor Choi Min-sik is a Buddhist so he prayed each time after eating a squid.
