Region Hacks, a question.

I understand that a hack is either an alteration in the service menu to 'enable' extra functions switched off depending in which region you live in, or an added IC loaded with software to enable those functions not normally present.

So here is the question, and remember manufacturers are 'supposed' to be supporting the multi region thing, where do the hacking companies like Techtronics get the relevant software from to do these hacks???? Surely the manufacturers don't divulge the info, as they may as well have done it in the first place and sold a multi region player! Isn't there an agreement of some sort to prevent manufacturers doing it?

This goes for all players as hacks are available for them all. Either we are being taken for a ride or there is a magical way of getting the software required for each player, which would mean any of us could programme an IC ourselves with any home pc and fit it DIY. Someone is making good money. Or am I just thick?

True, true. Not all players can be hacked without a physical mod due to pathways in the chip/dvd design. This really is Hollywood etc being tight gits as per. There is much debate about region coding and its side effects, as lab tests have been reported as indicating that region designed chips can have a deletoriuos effect to video performance. But then Hollywood etc. carry the weight with dvd producers and we get screwed. As DTS Borg notes about RCE as another method to try to prevent cross-border sales. Only omnipresent hack is to be found in pc's, a method I've tried and works fine.
