JVC DR-MX1ES DV-HDD dubbing problem

Good evening.
Has anyone else got this model?
I'm having problems when dubbing from DV in onto HDD.
I have followed the instruction manual, and it is either wrong or the unit is faulty.(I refer to page 70 if you have one)
Basically, when pressing right and left arrows on remote, the highlight does not move onto either the remote control switch or the auto capture button. As this is a required step (5) in order to dub, it cannot be used.
The green highlight remains on the sound monitor switch, which can be toggled (sound1, sound2, mix)
For information, I am connecting a Sony DCR TRV 355E camcorder as my DVin.
I would greatly appreciate any ideas or suggestions anyone may have on this, cos it's driving me nuts!
Regards
Steve

Replacement arrived today...guess what?

Exactly the same problem.
Does anyone know is the Sony TRV 355E has any compatibility issues with this JVC unit?
