benefits of an upscaling DVD player/recorder?

Can anybody,, briefly, explain the benefits of an upscaling DVD player?
Aren't DVD's, (off the shelf ones), in 540p, (is that right???!!), as standard?

If I get a player/burner with upscaling what does that give me?

Help?

Cheers,

Vince
