HK DVD30 wont play CD's

My Harmon Kardon DVD30 has decided it will not recognise CD's. DVD's play without any problem but if I put in a CD all I get is an 'disc error' message.

After 20 mins or so of turning the machine off and on again it will eventually give in a happily play any CD unless I put in a DVD or turn the machine off.

Is there any way of resetting the machine or any suggestions on fixing it. The warranty expired about 2 months ago
