Thomasb,
Hope I can be of some help. I bought Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo package (bought the bits and yetr to get the sub, but that's higher than your budget already as mine includes the floorstanders as frontas and the Sub as well..

Acoustic Energy provide remarkable sound for the money and one option you have is to get the Acoustic Energy Evo One Speaker package.

It's available for about £340, has 4 Evo One bookshelf speakers (still powerfully rated for their size, and can go as low as 50Hz, so well into Sub-Bass too).

You would then need to get an A/V Amp, and then have to spend out on speaker wire too, so probably looking at up to £700 mark, so a little over budget.

If your budget can stretch to this, then take a look.

Also, the Morduant Short Genie system has won a few awards for being a great system and this is 4 surround speakers, 1 centre & sub.
That should include everything you need to get up & running (Short of the DVD player of course)

http://ws4.richersounds.com/showprod...D-GENIE-SYSTEM

I can vouch for the Acoustic Energy sound quality as have the next package up at home and astounded by what my money has got me.
As an example, a suggested system with the evo package:

Evo One Package £340
Contains:
2 pairs of Acoustic Energy Evo One Bookshelf speakers
1 Acoustic Energy Evo Centre speaker

2 sets of stands £50 total (Check items for sale forum as would probably find bargains, say £50 for 2 sets at a guess)

Speaker Wire £32
Say QED Original or QED Brozne @ £2 or so a metre

A/V reciever £350
NAD T743 - very nice reciever, good quality sound

So that totals about £770, well over budget, but a great investment if you can afford it.

I have no huge experience with many systems tested etc or owned. Above system I'd suggest would impress you for the budget.

I'm sure someone will come up with a better suggestion than the 2 above, but I can vouch the Acoustic Energy setup I am very impressed with.

I have the package including the floorstanders, don't yet have the sub, running it from the NAD T753 and am QED-wired. Great.

Just my two pence worth. I'm sure others will suggest different options to you.

get a demo if you can.

Regards,

Dan.

*****Slightly incorrect info: The Evo one package contains the smaller Evo Compact speakers at the back. It would actually be £370 for the package if you went to www.sevenoakssoundandvision.co.uk (cheapest retailer and a decent-service supplier too).

So £30 extra, sorry.

Here's my recommendation for a system that wont cost the earth, but will look, and sound very good on your budget.

Speakers
http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/p...roduct_ID/2298

Receiver
http://ws3.kelkoo.homecinematv.co.uk...t&pid=TEA-AG7D

DVD Player
http://ws3.kelkoo.homecinematv.co.uk...t&pid=TEA-DV7D

Don't be put off by the price of the DVD Player. I shopped around and all other sites are selling this for £139.00.
At this price, it must be the bargain of the year.

I have just purchased these self same items and for just on £500.00 it looks and sounds superb.

HTH
Rob

(PS Both of the website I dealt with gave good service with all items being delivered within two days of ordering.)

Thomasb,
I'm sure I've heard good things about the Elac package somewhere on this forum, so may be worth checking out.

My last post was pretty confusing as got mixed up with the evo package.

If want Acoustic Energy option, purchase:

2 pairs of Evo Ones (£120/pair)
http://202.186.86.35/audio/articles/...ticenergy1.jpg
Your local sevenoaks is cheapest and should be able to demo

1 of Evo Centre (£130)
http://www.ivojo.co.uk/pics/acoustic...-centre-lm.gif

1 of Nad T743 (£350), but could perhaps go for the TEAC smiffy mentioned and save £200, therefore coming under budget!

Here's what I bought in the last Month and cost

Speakers:
1 Pair of Acoustic Energy Evo 3's (Floorstanders) £230 New!
Sevenoakssoundandvision.co.uk , Visited Watford Store
1 Pair of Evo Ones (Bookshelf speakers) £105 ex-display (unused & perfect)
Sevenoakssoundandvision.co.uk , Visited Watford Store
1 Evo Centre £80 !! and was immaculate, boxed etc. Perfect
Sevenoakssoundandvision.co.uk , Ordered from Staines shop

Total of £415!!, and bought Alphason AG-50 Stands (£50 brand new from Acton-Gate Audio inc delivery

Here's a photo of the 5 speakers (P.S, as the Floorstanders go down to 40Hz, sub bass is nice even without the subwoofer

Pic: (Ignore the Sub)
http://www.creative-audio.co.uk/SPEAK_files/Evo_3B.jpg
Avail in Light Maple, Dark Maple & also black.

Won What Hifi Product of the year 2003 when released.

sevenoaks still have ex-display perfect-condition speakers left, check out their website

P.s: Fifth Element sounded amazing at the weekend in DTS =)

Just my opinion of course....

I recently spent £700 on the Sony STR-DB900 receiver and the Sony 835 Pascal speaker package. What I liked was the minimalist look of the amp (not bulky at all - metal casing - and very few buttons / knobs etc) and the equally diminutive speakers (again, all metal) (the 200w active sub is a hefty beast though).
Most importantly though- fantastic thunderous sound !! Clear and detailed...even when very loud.
Full range of decoding options on the Amp.
Everyone here will tell you - YOUR OWN EARS are the best judge of ANY system or set-up - and in your price range, there's loads out there.
Enjoy.
