Why did you pick your DAP?

happy HD5 owner here, for me it was easy choice
Most important features for me:
-sound quality
-units size
-battery life

hd5 easy winner in all 3

Well not quite i picked mine on sound quality and after being in the fortunate position where i could actually trial the HD5 Ipod and Iriver i eventually plumped for the Rio Karma as imho the sound quality at roughly equivalent bitrates was far superior with the same headphones ie shure E4's but as we all know sound quality is in the ear of the beholder.
I also have no issues with either the battery life or the size of the Rio against the Sony as they both again roughly equate.

Same for me! And loving it, despite all it very minor flaws here and there, the thing sounds amazing, it's small and DAMN it lasts a long time.

its tough too, already took 5 drops and just have minor scraches

what do you mean why?

because it fell on the floor, that's why

Seriously, although i dont have a DAP (cant count the 2 yr old 64MB Creative as a DAP really), i think most people pick their DAP by the color of its earphone leads, must be white , i mean the herd just go for the iPod, and it helps that the iPod still looks the biz, but the vast majority buys because of the hype.
