Bose Wave CD/FM Tuner £400 not too bad sounding to my ears but bettered by,
Denon DM31 £200 + £100 speakers which is in turn bettered by,
Second hand Linn Classik £350-400 + £100 speakers.

If it were me I would be going for a Linn Classik with cheap speaker then upgrade speakers later or add a sub off the pre-outs. Linn Classik very upgradable in future and very decent sounding with £100 speakers to start with.

i would recommend exactly the same, would definitley go for the LINN first, i have LINN systems and am still amazed with the quality everytime i listen to them. if you are buying a Denon secod hand you can get them ridiculously cheap, i picked up second hand DM30 (the model before the DM31 less power out put also) for £60!! brilliant sound for money, but the LINN is amazing!!

Would it be possible to consider second hand seperates at the higher end of your budget? I've never heard the Linn system so that might not be the best advise.

linn

Linn makes the only good quality all-in-a-box system available, so it is the best recomendation they could give you. It has no digital outputs though ( I mean dvi-hdmi).
