A simple scart to s-video lead requires a s-video signal to be present at the scart, if there isn't one then you will get a B&W picture. Does your Freeview box actually output s-video?
So either get a Freeview box with a s-video output (on the scart or dedicated socket) or buy a RGB to s-video convertor (£££).

can you recommend some freeview boxes which allow s-video output through scart?

Nope, don't really know too much about Freeview hardware, I have my two year old Philips and it works so I'm happy

Try starting a new thread in this forum, you'll get some recommendations

an rgb to svideo converter isn't really £££, it's more like ££ and the first pound sign ain't so big either - about £25 or see if anyone on here has one kicking about (I would have but it's between sky+ and VCR atm)
