Onkyo CR505 DAB

I bought this unit earlier in the week. I'm fairly new to all this audio stuff. On the rear of the unit there is a sub output.

How does this work if I connect a sub up to it? How or what do I use to connect a sub, and what would be a good sub to accompany the Mission Volare V60 speakers I bought with it?

Cheers

If I were to get the Mission V6AS sub, would that work well or would it drown out the V60s?

Will the unit split the frequencies working like a crossover, sending the mid and highs to the V60 and low frequencies to the sub?

Hi Chris_J_0907,
I am not very familiar with the piece of equipment that that you are referring to, but I would say that most sub woofers have an adjustable high frequency cutoff, so overlap should not be a problem if you set up your sub properly. The subwoofer out on the unit, gives an un-amplified signal for the sub's amplifier to work on. You will need a cable with the appropriate impedance and correct terminations (refer your user manual). Don't spend too much money on the cable, but get a good one. I would suggest you look up Mark Grant's cables on the cable forum. I haven't bought any from him yet, but he seems to use top quality material and the prices seem very reasonable and the advertising is completely snake oil free.

Cheers,
Nirmal

Hi Chris

The CR-505's sub output will work with any active sub. Most decent ones offer a slam/depth setting - use depth with the CR-505. Just play the Volares at your normal listening volume, set the sub's crossover frequency at around 60Hz (you'll probably need to experiment), then gradually bring the sub level up to add extra weight to the lowest octaves.

Relatively few people use the sub output on products in this category but it's a very worthwhile feature. If you need to fill a larger room with sound from a compact micro/speaker package it's an ideal compromise...
