Operating system/Software for HTPC - help?

I'm finally getting my courage up to build a HTPC, my question is what software do i need installed? i've heard a lot about windows MCE and its remote control. but i've also come across iMon and i can't work out whether iMon needs MCE or can work with XP.
Basically i'm a bit cluless with the software side of this project so any suggestions of a good set up would be greatly appreciated.

whilst i'm here i have another quick question, i'm after a soundcard with a digital coaxial out to send to my amp for 5.1 surround sound with dvd playback, i've looked at the x-mystique and was wondering if there were any other recommendations or alternatives? i'm not wanting to spend much more than the x-mystique would cost.

For the money I dont think you will get much better than the X-Mystique.
I love mine.
