Question Turntable with Marantz PM4400

Hi there. I have a slight problem with my turntable and amplifier. I don't have much experience of using vinyl, so am not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have plugged my turntable into the phono input on my amp, but I'm only getting sound from my speakers at a very quiet volume. Will I need to buy a phono stage? And is it a bad idea to plug the turntable into one of the other inputs? I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Daniel.

What TT and cartridge are you using?

The Marantz amp has a MM phono stage, but will not work with MC cartridges.

If you have an MC cartridge you will either need to buy a phono stage or replace it with an MM cartridge.

Do not plug the TT into a non-phono input, you will always get a very quiet sound that way.

The turntable I have is a Pioneer PL-12D (from the seventies). But as for the cartridge, I have no idea. I'll have to investigate that. Thanks for the advice
