Arcam/Pronto malarkey

I have a Arcam AVR100 reciever and apparently it is possible to program discrete on/off codes by using
'RC5 codes 16-123 for ON and 16-124 for OFF'.

What exactly does this mean and how do I get it into my pronto?

Also are there discrete on/off codes for the DV88 dvd player??

You program these codes in using the Prontoedit software, downloaded from the Phillips website.

When modifying a button, there is an action tab labelled RC5/6 and if you click on this you can enter the relevant codes.
