I want one, but i will wait until they come down to about £500.
I love the idea of the colour screen etc.
As for it being a bargain?. Well compaired to other colour remotes which are £2000+ then it is cheap.
But £700 for a remote control which the mono pronto does the same job, then it is expensive.
However we don't need large screen TVs, or mega watt digital surround systems either. We just want them!.
As i've said before i don't NEED colour i WANT colour!. I've spent over £5000 on my system so another £500 to tie it all together isn't so bad.
For those people who have the mono pronto then buying a new colour one isn't as attractive option. As they already have most of the functions of the new remote. But for people who were thinking of getting a mono pronto may wait as i'am doing(for the price to reduce). Then the price difference will be about £300 ie £190 for the mono - £495 for the colour etc.
If you have a mono and are happy then good. But please don't flame those who want to go for the colour one as the saying goes "You pays your money and takes your pick!" etc.
Just got my first Pronto for £140 from Lets automate.

Yes, the colour pronto's are sex on a stick, but I think I'll wait until a) they become a bit more afordable (Lady Lichtenstien almost had a heart attack when I told her how much the original pronto cost... :D ) and b) the Marantz version is released, which has a hardware cursor pad. I believe they have pictures of it on the Remote Central website

It took me a long time to fork out over 200 quid for 'just a remote', but it was one of my better buys. Of course now I've seen the colour version, it's on my wish list. Strangely, the mono version was actually cheaper to import into the US from Letsautomate than to buy stateside. (I know someone who did it) I'll try to hold on 'til it gets down to about £500 anyway. ;)

Well done Confucius, I've been looking for details of the Marantz for ages.
I have a Denon AVC-A1SE and the other day I dropped the remote onto the floor – with some choice profanities from me. My fiancée laughed until I said: 'don't laugh. If this breaks I'm buying the Philips ProntoPro and it costs £750'. Her laughing ceased.

Not that sad, I think I'll download it too to get a feel for it. If the ProntoPro does come down to below £500 then I'll be tempted, I do like the idea of the bigger display on the Marantz though.

Anyone have any idea whether these new pronto's will handle irda?
Big Jim
16-10-2001, 5:23 PM
irda is a infrared protocol used by computers - and more relavently, by my telewest set top box for some reason.
learning remotes (including the standard pronto) don't handle it, which is a bit annoying
this is just what I have picked up and if you know better, please correct me.
oh well - its not as if I have any intention of spending £700 (or much more than £150 Really) on a remote.
Cheers,

Hi Tom,
I was speaking to the UK distributor and it seems there aren't any in this country just now. At least none through official channels.
Shouldn't be long.

Anybody got any info on the Marantz yet, re availability and price in the UK?
IMHO - I still think it looks the better bet of the two.

I got mine two weeks ago (RF bits to follow)
Everything great but here is two bad points.
Firstly, I dont like the flat hard buttons on the right of the remote as they are almost recessed and are at one height level with the rest of the remote.
Because of this they are a bit fiddly to press using one hand.
On my original Pronto the hard buttons on the right are raised and much easier to use.
Secondly, the way you have to lift off (and put down) the remote from the docking station is pretty daft. It goes on (or comes off) at a 30/40 degrees angle. It wont go on or lift off straight. In other words, dam fiddly.
If someone else in your family does not know how this thing comes off they are liable to do damage to the remote or locking device. Pretty silly design flaw if you ask me.
I guess thats the price you pay for style.
Eric
i got mine a week ago i dont have a problem with the buttons but the other point i agree the docking system is a bad idea and i think it wont be long before philips offer an upgrade for it .it designed using a mobile phone type conection that wont let go of the remote ,
also if you pick up my remote and tilt it to the left the back lights wont go on but if you twist it to the right it lights up like blackpool
,,and one other minor problem the software ((for programing it ))sux big time.. a loverly piece of kit like the pronto pro should have a good program to go with it :(
but on the whole its the bizzz ,,i paid £625.00 for mine but if the price settles at 500.00 its a bargain ,,
if you like graphics and web design like me its great fun and the finish looks great ...............
if i could give it a star rating from 1 to 5 it would be (4) down sides are
1,bad dock
2,slight bleeding of colours
3.could do with 16mill colours
4.price
please dont let this put anyone of getting one these point are very trivial and im a bit of a perfectionist .... and i cant spell hehe..........:p :p

Confucius, have you got permission from Remote Central to use their bandwidth by displaying this picture from their site?

I can't believe they can charge over £600 quid for a "fat" colour learing remote!!! I have a Compaq iPAQ which is thin, light, colour and has 32 Mb ram. You can get one for £250+vat now and remote control software for under £10.
I'll admit, the range is pretty limited (the IR port is not designed for the job really) but it makes a point! It's a powerful PocketPC and it is under half the price of a relitively "dumb" remote control ???
Hust thought I'd vent that :)
i think they are expensive because they are only sold in limited number unlike computer components ,i think they are great i bought 2 i liked them so much :)
