View Full Version : First SED TVs announced!
At the recently ended Internationale Funkaustellung (IFA) 2005 show in Berlin, Toshiba provided another glimpse into its surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) TV technology, with the company stating the SED flat panel TV will support full HDTV resolution (1,920×1,080 pixels), while adding that the first SED panels to hit the market will have a 50-inch diagonal.
The full announcement can be seen here (http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20050907PR210.html). The first ones will start shipping next March. The price, however, is not given... :)
That's great news :) It's a shame the pioneer of the technology is now bankrupt: http://www.candescent.com/ It really will offer amazing pictures though... think CRT-like images at HDTV resolution with no geometric distortion or power regulation issues.

sed will set you back about £10kIt's all happening with 1080p this month, isn't it? Where did that £10k come from? I recall reading that Canon/Toshiba said SEDs would come in at around the same price as PDPs, which £10k isn't. Perhaps it will be worth it, and they will sell them all, but I thought it would be a fraction of that. There will be a lot of good competition.

The first models to go on sale next year will be 50" with 1920x1080 resolution and they will be expensive, roughly the same as early plasmas.
Mass production will only start in 2007, at which point prices should drop to plasma/LCD level, and by 2010 Toshiba wants to dominate the flat-panel market above 42" (they won't license the technology to anyone else).
