I'm presuming you mean Dolby Digital 5.1 sound? If this is indeed the case, your Amstrad will NOT be able to decode this format. At present, the only Sky box which will be able to decode DD 5.1 is the SkyPlus box, although some Sony box owners might claim that their boxes *might* be able to do this. Dolby Digital 5.1 broadcasts will not start until later this year or early next, probably.

It also is unable to pass the signal to another device that can decode it which is the situation I face. Apparently the sony digibox is the only one with the requiered optical connnnector

To be absolutely *certain* that your digibox will decode Dolby Digital 5.1 programmes, when they are eventually broadcast via Sky Digital, you will have to buy SkyPlus which will naturally be available from Sky themselves (and the usual independants shortly afterwards). It's all rather up in the air at the moment but the SkyPlus box will cost you £300 plus a £10 per month subscription, plus £50 installation plus the cost of your present subscription if you are a subscriber. Hmmm! <img src="frown.gif" border="0">

PS Nobody seems to actually know if the Sony's optical system will actually work with Dolby Digital 5.1 or not. Sky may choose to only offer this with the SkyPlus system to ensure exclusivity.
