Windows Media player distortion

Please help!
When playing mp3 tracks with WM10 I get bad distortion.
I have gone to the help pages and it states the following:
3.17 Why do I hear audio distortion while playing an MP3 file?
If you hear audio distortion when playing an .mp3 file, find the file Ctmp3.acm on your computer and rename it to Ctmp3.bak. Windows Media Player isn't fully compatible with the file, which is a Creative PlayCenter MP3 decoder.
My problem is my system dose not have the file Ctmp3.acm.
Any idea what else my problem could be?

I have a Creative Sound Board and have no trouble listening to MP3, but on my previous machine I got distortion, I heard VIA chipsets have that problem, anyway what is your machine spec?, Also make sure you have no other MP£ player software/codecs installed, such as winamp...

I have a Via chipset
How do i check for other MP3 player software/codecs?

Not sure, but I stay clear of a Via chipset, what CPu do yo uhave, if it's a pentium you can pick up a good intel motherboard for between £40-£75...
