i've started getting an intermittent fault with my panasonic nvhd620 3 and a bit year old video.
i get total loss of sound and a central noise bar which splits into two, one moves up screen and one moves down. this repeats about every 2 seconds. this can happen with prerecorded or home recorded tapes although it tends to happen more with older prerecorded ones than with new ones. does anyone know what the possible problem/cure is or is it goodnight vienna.
tia.

Sounds like one of a multitude of faults that a vcr can develop in its lifetime. One for the repair man I suppose.

Could be dirty heads. Have you tried a head cleaner?
Or it may be that the auto-tracking is not working properly. Try manually tracking it.
Failing that - yep it needs to go back I think! :-(
Cheers,
Paul.

Common faults on that deck were....
worn pressure roller - causes tape to ride up and down audio/control head, hence your problems.
Worn video head drum upper or lower - same probs.
As said, simply dirty heads.
Also they had a tendency to break the loading motor coupling that connects to the motor drive shaft. It splits and causes the tape to load incorrectly and so same faults.
Approx parts prices...roller £15+, coupling 15p or head drums £50+ each. All plus labour of course, ie £35+ let's say.
Dirty heads you can plonk a tape cleaner though to try or do it yourself.
Search vcr repair on www.dogpile.com (http://www.dogpile.com) and it'll throw up loads of info.
Good luck.

Having considered and discounted the dirty heads/tracking options, the worn pressure roller explanation would seem to fit the bill. anyway people thx for all your advice.

I'll have look and see, but I'm 99% positive I have a spare roller floating about you can have free if you wish. Very simple to fit too.
I'll have a look throuhg my old spares and let you know.

Yes I do.
If you e-mail your address to me at generalskanky@yahoo.co.uk I'll plonk it in the post with a few notes.
You do realise this'll make Taz jealous. I didn't have one for his model of vcr, as it's so old. :)
