If it's the one I think it's about 6/7yrs+ old. Right?
If so, look at the pressure roller to the right of the deck. It's prob. very shiny by now and will be part of the prob.
Also, dirt build up/wear and tear on the (lower normally) drum that causes drag and can chew up tapes too.
Also clean the silver rod part behind the roller that comes up from the capstan motor, that can also cause drag.
If the drum looks very worn dump it and buy a new vcr.
If the roller (hanging down on an arm) looks very shiny, which I'd bet it is, it can be replaced easily. I'll look and see if I have an old one kicking around, but I doubt it.
If you'd had this problem about 10 days ago when I had a clearout I know I had a spare roller in my hand. But as it's an old deck I thought no one would still have one!!!
