Question making vhs recordings on svhs et vcr?

Hi folks, apologies if this is a stupid question - I'm thinking of replacing my existing vhs vcr with one that does svhs et (cos mine's getting old & dodgy).

Can anyone tell me whether an svhs et deck can be set to record in vhs mode, as I want to make recordings off my camcorder that my parents can play on their (standard vhs) vcr ?

Or am I missing something obvious here

there are some reviews on www.HomeCinemaChoice.com and www.home-entertainment.co.uk of JVC and Panasoic machines.
