power amp.. good idea?

I have a budget AV amp, which sounds great when listening at medium-high volume levels, but I feel it could be better at low levels. It can sound flat at times...

If I could turn the clock back to before I got my AV amp, I think I would have gone for a 2nd hand AV processor and 5 channel power amp.

I am now thinking of adding a 2nd hand Rotel 985 to my Yamaha (using the Yamaha for processing). Do you guys think this is a good move in terms of sound quality?

Are there any other 5 channel power amps out there available 2nd hand and cheap, which would suit my needs? My room is fairly small, so I dont need anything stupidly powerful, i'm just after good sound quality.

Thanks.
