Scarey server issue

Our server crashed today with unable to write to FAT on SYS errors

The drive concerned is 9 years old and is the SYS volume on our office server.

I ended up dismantling the server and putting the drive on a box with a fan blowing on it.

After 3 or so goes the server booted up OK and we were able to recommence work.

My boss has just ordered 2 new servers with mirrored drives - one will be Netware 6.0 to replace our evolved 4.11 with the 9 year old drive and the other will be a Microsoft crash machine (can't get a Tobit NW to NW migrate so we'll move that to Windows - woo more grunt for ADS* - time for head to head performance testing. (MY monies on the Netware box)

* Advantage Database Server

I thought Novell ported Netware to Linux anyway, that's why they're involved in the SCO vs Linux patents dispute.

That would be No 3

Unfortunately a lot of our Customers are going the Windows route

Despite Netware being there already and reliable - one site went NW to 2000 and the support calls are through the roof with printer issues.

Whenevr my boss suggests a Windows development server I say FILER and he backs down!

Well get a Windows XP background for your desktop and Intel Inside sticker, then build with and Athlon or even better Opteron and Linux. I mean he's never going to use it directly is he!
