I guess it depends on exactly what you mean by hi-def.
At the display level it effectively means more than 720 lines, which the bigger projectors easily display.
At the interface level, it could mean the very specific HDTV component interface that has become well established in the US, or the HDCP/HDMI/DVI interface that will be required for Sky and HDDVD/Blu-Ray playback.
If you are only interested in the latter, then some sort of interface will be required, but that is not a problem. Maybe you would be able to connect a Sky HD box directly into a CRT, but that would be a risky assumption. I think there are some threads on the HD forum about defeating HDCP (which is illegal) that you might want to read. Basically, there are products available now that appear to do what is needed.
What would be ideal is a scaler that could accept HDMI with HDCP and output RGBHV, but that might be too much to hope for.
