DVI vs VGA for Long Cable

I need to string a long cable (50 - 75 foot) from desktop to monitor, and can use either DVI or VGA cable (as desktop and monitor accept both interface types). Which do you recommend for this purpose? That is, is one better than the other when used in a long cable? Thanks, -Scot

DVI is really limited to about 7m, but longer lengths are possible using top grade stuff from companies like Bettercable - but at a price of course! Have a look at Lindy for excellent quality VGA cables at reasonable prices. Hope this helps.

15 - 23m is a long run for Analogue RGBHV (VGA) and or Digital RGB (DVI) so both potentially require more than just a cable.

The DVI solution will most likely produce the sharper image - how does the system look on Analogue vs. Digital with short cable runs.

A Gefen DVI Extreme Fibre optic DVI cable will cost you around £390.00 for a 20m cable.

See http://www.gefen.com/kvm/cables/hdtv...sp#hdtvextreme

A BetterCables Display Magic II 15m DVI will cost you around £240.00 - though you may find you require a signal amp if your Graphics card is not up to 'driving' the long cable.

See http://www.bettercables.com/15me4febecad.html

A decent quality 20m HD15 (VGA) cable will cost you around £150.00 and I'd budget for a VGA Line Amp with variable drive (approx £150.00) as your sure to notice a drop off in signal quality without one.

See http://www.kramerelectronics.com/ind...m.asp?desc=210

I'd suggest you find someone who can provide a couple of options for you to try out in your system to evaluate what works best for you.

Best regards

Joe

It would be wrong to say the Lindy DVI cable wont work for you - it may!

As ever my advise is order either one knowing it may not work in your set up - so ensure you can return it if you have a problem.

Best regards

Joe
