View Full Version : ATI Radeon useless at 640x480
The Radeon AIW that I just bought is going straight back, half of the features didn't work and DVD playback at 640x480 is urgh! Geforce 2 how could I ever doubt you?

Hang on a sec, though, Jeff, why would you ever use it at 640x480? Plasma screen?
A CRT projector would use it at 800x600+.
Also have you tried the latest drivers?
HC Dude, I have a Loewe Aconda TV with a VGA input which only does 640x480@60Hz. DVD playback using a Geforce GTS 2 is excellent, so I decided to build a dedicated HCPC. After some research I came to the wrong conclusion that the Radeon had the best DVD playback. It is probably good at 800x600 and above but I guess that it has very poor down scaleing or something as I get some bad shimering effects. I tried the latest beta drivers but no difference. I have the latest WinDVD and PowerDVD software, again no change. I have now put the Geforce back and DVD picture quality is excellent again.

Fairy snuff - duly noted.
Yes the Radeon appears to be encroaching upon the Geforce 2 MX as the better card. It's still limited in not supporting custom Timing Resolutions but its getting there.
It comes into its own at 1024x768 apparently.
Difficult to do a test without having one http://www.wvip.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

Dooh! I knew I would regret that impulse buy.
It may not be a problem ith 640 x 480, I have read some posts on avscience of someone getting the same problem after upgradeing from a Gefore card (same as me).

Jeff, don't worry, I am not too down harted. I did the 'research' on the card before I bought and had also read the AVS stuff. So I knew what I was letting myself in for. I actually have an AIW Radeon and Geforce Ultra card here now. The plan is to use / try both for HCPC use and report back the results. I should also have a reasonable scaler and the HTPC route (s)can be compared with the scaler. I though it was a good way to educate me (practical hands on experience) and I would post results if people were interested.
