diffrence between cdr & cdrw and dvdr, dvdrw etc

Hi whats the diffrence or whats the standard that is used for making audio cd's? (burning cda's, mp3s to cd etc). theres two types (cdr cdrw) but i dont know which to pick for what i specified above.

also same goes for dvds. am i right in thinking i should use dvdR's instead of dvdrw's to burn dvd movies (ifos bups vobs way etc) to dvd or what?

i know the r stands for recordable and w stands for writeable but they both kind of mean the same kinda thing to me virtually :rotfl:

Think of the R as reecordable and RW and RAM as rewritable. Helps keep the difference clearer in your mind when browsing the shelves..

Recordable - can record on it ONCE

Rewritable - can keep on recording on it like a VHS tape

so when something has W that just means u can write media on it more than once basically?

Yes. RW means, you can erase it and start over. R means, you can't; once "burnt", it stays "burnt".

The difference between + and - on DVDs is that they are two different and effectively incompatible recording formats, invented by two different companies.

Incompatible, means that, if your recorder/drive, etc. is designed for only one of these, then it won't work with the other type of blank disc. What it does NOT mean, is incompatible for playback. On the whole, most players and recorders will playback either type of disc, provided it has been finalised.

Which you should choose depends on what your device will handle for recording. If it will handle both, then there is a school of thought that says - (minus) discs tend to exhibit better compatibilty for playback on other players/recorders.

Here is my two cence

Use - Discs if you intend to make copies of cd's/dvd'/games that are to be played for long period

Use + Disc if you are backing up your data and only need to access it infrequesntly, i.e to be stored for a long period until you need to access it again..

DVD RAM discs have the same use as +, for Data storage the only difference being is you can write to it like a hard drive and it lasts longer...
