Went to see "THE ISLAND" today, despite the bad reviews and the fact that it is already down as one of the biggest bombs in history in the U.S. I wanted so much to like it and thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt as the trailer looked interesting. Oh dear...

Sadly, i thought it was utter s**t. It is badly paced, badly executed, badly acted by good actors, and even the many action scenes fall flat. I have NEVER been so disppointed in a film, and no wonder Dreamworks are going under because of this boxoffice dud and critical failure.... it is that bad. A shame.

Thanks for the info. I was on the verge of going to see that one (mainly because it sounded a little like a rehash/update of Logan's Run), but I wanted to hear the ops of others first. Based on what you've said - I think I'll pass.

Metro gave it one star yesterday.

Not surprised its pants - its becoming more of a shock when Bay makes a good film (Pearl Harbour, Bad Boys 2, The Island)

Morning Razor, knew you'd be in here :smashin:

Pearl Harbor is a great film, and the 4 disc collectors edition is superb.

Sorry but Pearl Harbour is a load of patronising sh*te (just my opinion :) )
The line that the RAF officer said "If there any more like you at home, the enemy better be worried" nearly made me sick! Hoorah for America! Hoorah Hoorah! After all we would'nt of won the Battle of Britain without them  Being an ex Royal Marine, things like this really **** me off

Foxy have been to Razors house again? (cant blame you he's got a nice telly) sorry mate but by any strecth of the imagination its rubbish and was an insult to all those who lost thier lives on the day. it tried so hard to be "titanic" that it forgot to really tell the story, worring about a love triangle that was so trite and over cooked it had gone off - patronising rubbish - watch it again with your brain turned to the "on" position.

For the classic Pearl Harbour movie try From Here to Eternity.

The "people" story in the build up to the raid is infinitely better than the Michael Bay disaster. :smashin:

Thank god Scarlett Lips Johansson was in it (yes Jesus definately loves her), or i might off feel asleep.

First hour was good, but got tedious, ad very predictable. Final breakout scene looked like some Building Society advert.

Yeah. I struggle over Scarlett's lips. A bit too big for my liking, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.

Been looking forward to seeing this for a few weeks. Purposely avoided the trailers (that's another issue), so knew very little about the film, and I'm sure I enjoyed it more because of it.

I go to the cinema at least once a week and so I'd like to think I'd know a stone cold turkey of a film, and I don't think this is half as bad as is made out, honestly.

It's NOT full of action....so that takes out the adrenalin junkies. It's not really deep and meaningful, although it covers some interesting issues...that yes, actually do make you think. (It may be a kind of future we end up living in...y'never know). It is possibly slightly overlong, and occasionally 'forgets' the interesting concepts at the start in favour of all out action, but even those scenes are well done and slightly different to the norm...the sound is amazingly punchy in these scenes and must be a demo for you home cinema enthusiasts.

So, no it's not the best film ever, but I thought it was quite entertaining....and that takes some doing these days. I certainly wouldn't put people off going to see it and making their own mind up. :smashin:

I can't think of many reasons why this film was universally panned (although really it wasn't; the reviews are better described as 'above average' to 'good'). It reminds me of the negative response to 'National Treasure' earlier this year which to this day baffles the hell out of me. There was a film that didn't take itself too seriously, had plenty of interesting plot elements and even taught you a little bit about American history (OK, a lot of it was made up but the intentions were good). I think the reason that film was panned is because of its more generic elements and pretty forgettable characters. But 'Sahara' was essentially the same in this respect and the reviews were better despite it being (in my opinion) an inferior, but still decent enough film. Still, 'National Treasure' is for me the most underrated film of the year thus far.

Anyway, back onto 'The Island' which, like 'National Treasure' features Sean Bean as the bad guy. The acting wasn't that bad really, I've seen far worse. The scenes where there are 2 Ewan McGregors were really well done.

Yes, the action scenes were a bit over the top but let's face it, if Bruckheimer had been producing those train wheels on the lorry would probably have been gas cannisters. I mean, there's not a single full-on explosion in the entire film.

You simply shouldn't go to a Bay film expecting to be challenged on an intellectual level. Having said that, this is probably the most intelligent film he has ever made and does have a few interesting points though they've generally been covered in other films before.

To conclude my defence of the film, I would say it is one of the better summer blockbusters of this year. Though it doesn't touch 'Batman Begins', it's certainly a far better film than 'Fantastic Four'.
