Problems with Philips 9000SA

Hi all, first post in this forum!

I have just bought a Philips 9000 DVD player and hooked it up to my Benq 8700+ front projector via HDMI to DVI.

I get a really great picture at 720p but I see some minor stuttering in pans. Very annoying!

I noticed that my projector indicates a 60 Hz signal, despite PAL being 50 Hz and maybe that is what causes the stutters?

I have set the DVD to PAL but that doesn't help.

Any suggestions on how to force the payer to output 50 Hz?

Best regards,

Kenneth

are you sure this is a player issue, could be the projector just converts everything to 60 Hz?

Hi Nic,

To be honest I don't know.
Both DVD and projector are speciefied to handle PAL / 50 Hz.

How can I find out?

How about sending a standard PAL resolution and see if the pj recognises that as 50Hz?

I'll go and have a look at the settings in my DVP9000 to see how I've got things set up - my AE700 definitely recognises a 50Hz signal.

Mark, My Benq indeed shows a 50 Hz signal in 576p...but I now gt a confirmation that 8700 cannot sync to 50Hz in 720p or 1080i.

Wonder whether I should keep the player and stick to 576p or return it and buy a new screen instead.

Hi Kenneth.

Sorry, I haven't had a chance to check things yet - but do you think this means that the "problem" is with your pj, or is it something the Philips is doing? I mean, will any upscaling DVD player create the same situation do you think?

Mark,

The answer I got on AVSforums is that ANY player wil cause this..ie the problem is with the Benq.

Indeed!

I'm considering returning the Philips, although it seems to be a fine player.

You don't fancy a firmware change on your Benq then

Alternatively, you could do what I did... sell all your region 2 DVDs (the Pal speedup was killing me!) and buy only NTSC movies

I like the Philips, despite its foibles - it's just so annoying that you can't utilise the 720p @ 50Hz... although having said that, I wonder how good the scaler is in the Benq? It might be that by using HDMI in the Philips and outputting 576p the image would be virtually identical/preferable to using the DVD player's 720p/1080i output? That isn't the case for me - it seems that the player's scaler is preferable to the AE700's, but what with the 8700+ being that more expensive/upmarket it could be that using 576p may produce the better image anyway!? That is assuming that the Benq's scaling is bypassed when receiving a 720p signal.

From my brief tests I find the quality of 576p over HDMI to be better then s-video but it's a lot softer then 720p.

Maybe some tweaking of the sharpness can take care of that.

AFAIK, Benq does not have a firmware update for 8700.

Have you tried setting TRUELIFE to +1... or maybe +2? That definitely sharpens things up.

Re firmware - I read yout thread over on AVS - I meant changing to Runco (?) firmware! I don't think I'd have the nerve!!

Just had a thought - what happens if you set the DVD player to output an NTSC (60Hz) signal with a Pal DVD? Would the DVD player convert Pal to NTSC and therefore eliminate the judder? Or is that just me having wishful thinking?
