HD-DVD players will be compatible with normal dvd, but not the other way around. If you buy a standard dvd player, it will NOT play hd-dvd.

HD-DVD and Bluray are two competing formats, rather like betamax and VHS in the 70's and 80's

I've been worrying about this as well, toying over whether to buy a top-notch DVD player or a cheaper one (though none under £1000 seem perfect, having some fault or other if you read the posts here - though that is probably the point of these forums to detect such things!).

However, then I read a quote from one of the manufacturers of the new systems where they say that they envisage DVD being obsolete in 10 years. That's a long time, and he was pushing the bloody format!

Let's face it, in the last 20 years we've seen a lot of new technology in music and video storage launched, most of it now obsolete or just not having taken off. There's only really CD, VHS and DVD that have penetrated the mass-consumer market, and not necessarily because they were the best quality formats, either. Who can say if HDDVD or BluRay will succeed, or if they'll both flop and we'll all be storing our music on huge hard drives in the future, downloadable from the web!

I dunno, so I'm probably going to buy quite a good DVD player, but not a really good one. Having said that, I hope one of the new formats takes off.

Sorry, I don't think I really helped there!

I know its confusing but you really need to think that HD DVD and Blu Ray are completely different formats. They use Blue Lasers while DVDs and CDs use red lasers.

Current DVD players only have a red laser thus they could never play a Blu Laser based disk.

Denons players (among other brands too) do indeed UPSCALE a regular DVD picture to Hi Def LIKE quality. Notice how I said hi def like. Not actual Hi def.

The difference between regular definition and high definition is simply the resolution.

Hi def is a minimun of 1280X720 (720p) or the optimum 1920X1080 (1080i/p)

There is more than one way to enjoy hi def movies and videos.

Players like the ones that will support Blu Ray and HD DVD formats will be one.

Another will be (or is already in some countries) HD TV broadcasting.

The third is through a PC.
If you use Widnows Media player 10 on a PC with high specs conected to a monitor or display capable of hi def resoultions, you can watch WMV

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...tShowcase.aspx

These are videos which come on a DVD disk but would not play on a DVD player.

Remember that a DVD is simply an optical storage medium.
They come in many varieties. DVD Video, DVD Audio, DVD ROM.

So all in all there will be more than one way to enjoy hi definition in the future. Through broadcasting, through optical formats and through computers.

What your new Denon DVD player will do is upscale a low resolution DVD picture, to a higher resolution. But since the original picture isnt actually hi def, the results would never be as nice as if the picture came from a hi def source. Thats why everyone wants a propper hi def player like HD DVD and the disks to go with it.

Finaly. You also need to make sure you have a display capable of showing these higher resolutions.
The display needs to have the propper conections too.

If you get a 2910 you need to use the digital conections (HDMI or DVI-D) to enjoy the upscaled picture. It wont actually work through the analog conectioncs like component. (even though it should and could).
