I know its confusing but you really need to think that HD DVD and Blu Ray are completely different formats. They use Blue Lasers while DVDs and CDs use red lasers.
Current DVD players only have a red laser thus they could never play a Blu Laser based disk.
Denons players (among other brands too) do indeed UPSCALE a regular DVD picture to Hi Def LIKE quality. Notice how I said hi def like. Not actual Hi def.
The difference between regular definition and high definition is simply the resolution.
Hi def is a minimun of 1280X720 (720p) or the optimum 1920X1080 (1080i/p)
There is more than one way to enjoy hi def movies and videos.
Players like the ones that will support Blu Ray and HD DVD formats will be one.
Another will be (or is already in some countries) HD TV broadcasting.
The third is through a PC.
If you use Widnows Media player 10 on a PC with high specs conected to a monitor or display capable of hi def resoultions, you can watch WMV

These are videos which come on a DVD disk but would not play on a DVD player.
Remember that a DVD is simply an optical storage medium.
They come in many varieties. DVD Video, DVD Audio, DVD ROM.
So all in all there will be more than one way to enjoy hi definition in the future. Through broadcasting, through optical formats and through computers.
What your new Denon DVD player will do is upscale a low resolution DVD picture, to a higher resolution. But since the original picture isnt actually hi def, the results would never be as nice as if the picture came from a hi def source. Thats why everyone wants a propper hi def player like HD DVD and the disks to go with it.
Finaly. You also need to make sure you have a display capable of showing these higher resolutions.
The display needs to have the propper conections too.
If you get a 2910 you need to use the digital conections (HDMI or DVI-D) to enjoy the upscaled picture. It wont actually work through the analog conectioncs like component. (even though it should and could).
