HD5 problems (sonicstage etc.)
I recently bought a new hd5, but I am having huge problems with it. The biggest of them is sonicstage. As an old minidisc user, I am used to this crappy software, but I've never had so much problems with it until now. I installed the new SS version (3.1) that came with my HD5, but it just doesn't work. If I am lucky enough to get it started, it terminates itself with a few error messages in a minute. This is really annoying because there is no other way to get music on my player (or is there?). I just don't understand why sony has to play around with atrac, why can't they make their players support plain mp3 without converting it to something worse first?

Try using a good registry cleaning program to clear every last trace of SS out of your PC's registry AFTER uninstalling SS and AFTER backing up any important files. Did the trick for me.

Becasue ATRAC sounds better (arguably) has smaller file size and plays gapless? maybe? In any case the HD5 will play plain old mp3's without converting it to ATRAC.
As to your problems with getting SS to run, sorry to hear that. I'm no expert on fixing things but it may help others to know what your operating system is? I believe there may be issues with older systems...?

Does it? :D Do I need SS for transferring the mp3 files, because I tried to just transfer the mp3 songs to my player and it didn't work just like that, the player refused to play them.
And my os is xp home.

Yes it will play MP3's but you do need SS to transfer it to put them in them database so that it your HD5 can play them. Should work fine on XP Home so it's likely to be another issue but sadly I'm not expert enough to know what? Sorry. Maybe the procesor speed or memory?

I still think something went wrong with the original install (it happens), and that something in the software registry is refusing to co-operate. Clean out, clean up and reinstall. All my problems were solved doing this, and my PC is a similar spec to yours.

Search the boards for the alternative MP3FM software from Sony that allows you to transfer files without using SS.

But beware: I found it only alphabetises albums, rather than playing them back in correct number order - seemingly no way to change this. And you need the SS drivers to run it, as it uses the SS-installed OMGAUDIO folder on the player.

Cleaned the registry, but it still does not work. I have re-installed like hundred times now and I get the same problems all the time.

All very true and very valid. But if the guy can't get SS to work at all, then this is certainly an alternative, at least for the time being. I wish you could simply drag and drop thru Windows Explorer.
Karhu You may find that like some Windows problems, a refresh will solve it. Sometimes it doesn't matter how hard you try, some things will never work.

I tracked down all sony related registrys and guess what, it seems to work now. Thx everybody.
---edit---
Hmm, I'll take that one back, it just worked longer after I destroyed the registrys. Now it gives me the errors again, goddamn you sony!

Hurrah! Who says you can't fiddle with the registry (carefully, of course!).
