Ron Locke - Help Please
Hello Ron
I picked up my Kef Thx Ref speakers at the weekend, which includes as i mentioned before 2 sets of Tdm34ds's now my problem is positioning i rang Kef last week and they recomended because i am using 2 set of rears i place the set at the sides approx 2/3 of the distance from the front and the rears set at the same height as the sides but approx 1 ft from the side walls.
Armed with this info i hung the left side speaker last night no problem but bearing in mind the room length is 12ft 8 i placed the speaker 8 ft distance from the fronts ( 8 foot is the central point of the tdm34 speaker) so the distance between the side and the rear wall is approx 4 ft not taking that once the rear speaker is fitted the distance will be reduced by the depth of the rear Tdm34.
After all this waffle my question is from yours or any body else who is reading this experience will they be too close together i don't want to go too far before realising i've made a boo boo.Unfortunatly i don't have any stand for the speakers to experiment with so any advise would be greatfully appreciated.
regards
richard

Richard,
I have today ordered 2 pairs of TDM rears. The sides will be about 1 metre from the back wall. I don't know about the 2/3 of the distance theory, but mine will be level with the listening position, about 4 metres back and about 1 metre higher than the seating position. (room is about 5 metres square). The rears will be in from the side walls about 1.5 metres. I don't know how this will work at the moment, as I obviously havent got them yet although seems to work well with my existing speakers. They should be here this week (!)
I'll let you know how I get on.
Rob.

Richard,
I would agree with Rob. As a starting point, install the sides in your null area and work backwards from there. The 2/3 distance bit that KEF are on about is a bit strange though. I have never heard of putting a dipole in front of a listening position.
Our's are 2m from the floor.
I think as long as you watch the polarity of the backs with relation to the sides, you will be OK.
I bet it will sound great when you get them all installed.

Picked up the TDMs this morning and mounted them. Haven't had time to listen, or even set them up as yet. Hopefully over the weekend. They certainly look sexy though

Richard,
TDMs are up and running. Sides, as I said are level with the listening position, about 1 metre above. I think this is the reccomended spot. The rears are behind the seating position, about 1.2 metres in from each side and slightly less apart, same height. I was a bit limited on position, as its where I had the wiring for the existing speakers, although I don't see any other logical position for them.
Watched a movie (The sixth day- not so good a film, but a decent soundtrack) Sound wise, they are very 'full'. The rear sound now sounds as full as the front when it needs to be with plenty of bass. What has been lost a bit compared to my previous speakers is placement, effects are much more ambient. I guess this is the effect of using dipoles. I haven't tried using the THX mode on the processor. Might give it a try to see if its any better.
Hope you get your brackets sorted out. I'll put some new pics on my webpage this week if you're interested so you can see how its turned out.
Regards Rob.

Rob
The brackets came the next day (well done Kef) only problem was no sticky rubber pads the ones that go on the bottom to protect/ seperate the speaker from the wall, so! rang Kef again today a set in the post hopefully tonight.
Have the sides and 1 rear up at the moment having to do a bit of construction work for the last rear there is a a number of electric wires boxed in that need buring tonight.
Rob you mentioned that your speakers are 1 meter from the listening position is that i meter from the top of your head to the bottom , tweeter or top of the speaker.
Tom if your around hows the tag package doing at the mo and have you had any takers for the denon as yet?
cheers
richard

Richard,
The speakers are 1.7 (bottom)- 2 metres (top) from the floor. They are 30cm high roughly as you know. My ears are 1 metre from the floor when seated, so .7-1 metre higher than listening position. I don't think its critical within a few centimetres. My other speakers were smaller, and I was governed by the existing wiring. Seems to work well though.
Tom, What amps did you buy in the end ?
Rob.

With so many people fittting 2 pairs of TDM surrounds here, is there a deal on these somewhere at the moment?
I'm serioulsy considering these for my 5.1 rears, they will need to be around ear level against the back wall around 1m Behind the listening position around 4m apart.
Can anyone give and opinion how they would be likely to perform in this position.
Mark.

Richard,
I just posted in another thread about the Servo 15. I picked one up from my local Richer sounds only last week. They had to order it, took about 5 days, so they should still be able to get you one. For £499 a seriously good sub.
Rob.

TDM Guys
Hi Rob and Fatrich
Me is looking into the dipole, bipole thing and wanted to get some TDM's but was rather deterred from price point of view.
Just wondered if it si common to ask or not, but do you mind letting s know what price you paid for these as a double pair?
ANd out of interest, are they not bi and di polar wireable?
Just to let you know have posted a new thread and am looking ot find out more information like the stuff that you two have been conversing.
Another question, did you consider anythign else other than the kefs? ANd what av amp you using?
Cheers hifi troopers......
Thanks

I paid £1300 for a pair, though I felt I could have pushed harder but by that time I just wanted the speakers.
KEF are one of if not the best di pole I have heard (Snell seriously good as well but over double even KEFs price!)
Speakers are not bi wirable and don't need to be. A waste of money IMHO. I always use a good rule of thumb, bi wiring is either down to poor cross over design or a marketing thing that doesn't deliver any worthwhile upgrade.
For films there isn't much better....

So much for KEF restricting the Ref / THX range to specialists who can demonstrate these products. I fell for that one. Ron care to comment?
