Take it to the grave

This is a shot of a gravestone from the church next to Whitby Abbey. I think the weird pattern is the result of water slowly eroding away the surface of the stone. Whatever it is I find it a bit creepy...

Photographed using a Pentax P30 on Fuji Neopan 1600 and then scanned.
