Thumbs down Disk Check Utility On iPods 4g

I have had an 4th generation 20gb for about 6 months now and guess what, it has started developing problems. I have heard rumours that the time which i purchased my iPod was when Apple were having problem coping with the demand for iPods and resorted to using inferior parts.

When iTunes is open and my iPod is connected, a small speech bubble appears at the bottom right hand corner of the screen telling me to run a disk check utility. I have found no utility of the sort in the software provided so I believe there must be in the firmware of the iPod itself. I am probably incorrect but those are my suspicions.

Is there anyone else with similar problems or who knows how to access the magical disk check utility ?

And before anyone ask, yes I was stupid enough to loose the flaming receipt
Cheers

I know this may be a silly question but could the bubble be refering to your pc and not the player?

Does the "bubble" come from ITunes or windows in the bottom right corner?

If it is the player then there might be no problem if its all working fine. As long as your i-pod seems to work fine i wouldn't let it bother you.

I would agree that if your iPod seems to be behaving itself I would leave it alone I've never used a disk utility on mine, so I would advise against using any windows utilities as they would erase special hidden folders that are needed for the iPod to work

There *is* a disk check tool as part of the iPod's in-built diagnostic mode. This is entered via the iPod controls and not from the computer. So, if the computer is telling you to run a disk check on your iPod, it's more likely that the computer is at fault, not the iPod. As JohnG says, don't run any disk check from the computer.

If you really think the iPod's not working correctly, you could try the standard Reset feature:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705

or even Restore feature:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983

It may also be worth updating the iPod's software:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60944

As to losing your receipt, this isn't required to get repair from Apple. Just go to the Apple iPod Support site:

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/

and click the Request Service Online link. There's also a healthy array of help on the site.

Keep us posted.
