and a reset as well? time to ask Sony for help. You should still have your 1 year guarantee, so long as you didn't do anything it will be fixed for free

Turning the battery switch off resets all settings so may as well be a reset switch.

the built in battery switch isn't a reset. The manual says it just disconnects the battery in instances of long disuse

Make sure all your music is transferred off.

To initialise the hard disk (as you've probably found), press the 'menu' button,
move down to the 'Format' option, and press Right (>>). Then move down and select 'Initialize Hard Disk', and press Right (>>). Then when it asks you to proceed, press Left (<<) to highlight the 'Yes' button and press Play.

To reset the device, it's very similar. Press Menu, move down to 'Format', press Right (>>). This time make sure 'Factory settings' is highlighted and press Right (>>). Again, when it asks you to proceed, press Left (<<) to highlight the 'Yes' option and hit Play. This should restore the factory settings.

If that doesn't work, then you need to go back to Sony. I don't understand how they can say the device isn't covered - unless you've done something to invalidate the warranty (open it up, etc)?
