When you say 2.5g phone Im assuming that you mean GPRS? 2.5g is probably more a reference to EDGE which Orange are rolling out just now.
Yes it is, Im currently using an o2 3g sim in a 6310i with no problems at all. I know that Hutchinson (three) were blocking people doing this but this was due to them actually roaming onto o2's network once they did this and so costing hutch money!
I doubt if you will have any problems.
