I would say that 9 feet is about the minimum for a screen this size. But at the end of the day its up to the indivdual.

I sit approx 12ft away from my sp50 and it still can feel very up close and personal so 6ft is pretty close for a TV this size. The manuals tend to suggest 9-10ft as a minimum distance otherwise you are liable to suffer with eye strain and I believe that if you do suffer from rainbows they can be made worse when you are closer to the screen.

4 metres may not seem that much but when you actually measure it then it's quite a lot.
Unless you live in a house with whopping great rooms I think that this sort of viewing distance would be impossible to achieve unless you are going to use a larger room as a 'mini cinema' in which case you can place the set at one end of the room & seating as far as possible at the other.
I live in a much larger than average sized semi-detached house & certainly would not be able to achieve such a distance in the sitting room which is the largest room in the house together with the bedroom which is located right above it.

No, your eyes aren't going to explode.
If you have rainbow sensitivity, it may just be aggravated by being close. Other than that, I reckon you'll be getting a good cinematic experience. Enjoy.

Of course, you could always use a smaller television

From a US manual:
46" screen - at least 5.6ft
50" screen - at least 5.9ft
56" screen - at least 6.6ft
61" screen - at least 7.2ft
Or use this viewing distance calculator. 6 ft comes out at a 53" screen to achieve the THX recommended viewing angle for 16:9.

Thats taking into account a HD Signal, for normal SD viewing the viewing distance is much greater.

My parents have a 55" screen.
They sit at 3.5 to 4 meters. I always watch at 3 meters.
They do watch normal TV on it. I only watch HD stuff and (downloaded)films and series with post-processing via PC.

I sit at about 6 feet away and have found no problems , in fact it just adds to the cinema feeling you get with this TV
Just enjoy it no matter where you are

I only sit about 7ft away from my set and doesnt bother me in the slightest, as FG Evans said it just adds to the cinema feeling, PQ is still the bizz.
