processor at a resonable cost

Ok heres the thing in a month or so im going to be buying a rotel 1075 5 channel amp.Initialy ill be using my present sony 940 as a processor.<br />As i cant seem to find any reasonably priced processors (400 - 1000 £) i was wondering what mid priced reciever would be good to use.<br />I would like to have dpl2 and 7.1 incase i go that route.So if the amp has pre outs for all 8 channels but only amplification for 5 that would be fine.<br />i was looking at the marantz and harm/kard range.<br />Does anyone know how logic7 compares to dpl2 ?

Basicsly i want the mid priced reciever with the best front end.

How about the Denon 3802. It has pre-outs for all the channels, Pro-Logic 2, DTS-ES Discreet etc etc

Prices around 600 - 800 quid depending on where you buy.

Probably the best bet, the 3802 - else wait for the rumoured new Denon pre-amp, no idea about the price though ...

My main concern with the 3802 was that the 1075 power amp wouldnt be a big improvement over the denons internal amps.And it would leave me feeling i wasted money on the rotel.

Anyone have any comments on the logic7 vs dpl2 thing ?

Thanks lowrider i just needed some reassurance that it IS that big a difference.
And gary thanks for the offer the price sounds nice , but i wont have money for a procssor for a while.I was kinda getting a feel for things.
I still find it hard to believe there arnt any mid priced processors out there.Its a reciever or one arm and two legs worth of processor :O(

Just because the power rating is similar doesn´t mean the quality also is, you should have a big improvement with the Rotel amp...

if you can stretch your budget a bit take a look at the classifieds bit - I have a Lexicon up for sale at £1,250....

I can't compare Logic7 to DPL2 as I've not heard the latter.

I can say that Logic7 is excellent and I always use it for DD/DTS as well as a "super" prologic.

If we forget about the Lexicon M12 is high-price £2.5K-£5K ?

I bet with a bit of shopping around you could get a Cyrus AV5 for less than the £1,000 list price. It's an excellent processor but with some notable features missing (i.e. EX, video switching). Same with the Roksan and the Myryad.

Nothing around at the £400-£700 mark though..

I've been in the exact same position as Riddler, ie. looking for a processor to match the rotel 1075 amp. my list is this:
Rotel RSP 985 & 976
Sony TA-E9000ES (vague promise of DPLII in next software upgrade)
Marantz AV9000

These are what I've been recommended. BUT they are all old models waiting for the new formats.

So like Riddler, I'm buying the rotel now and waiting till next year until the new processors arive.

I'm stuck in a similar situation.

Over the years I've acquired a couple of Rotel power amps and would love nothing more that to whack in a decent processor to replace my existing (E492) with full DD/DTS etc capabilities.

As already commented, whilst there are a number of offerings around the £1000 mark or maybe even slightly below, (Cyrus, Rotel) none of these jump out at you with their support for newer formats such as EX and PLII.

Now I'd love a Tag AV32R but it is a serious amount of dosh, with sadly, a fairly low WAF (wife acceptance factor for those of you not in the know ;) )

Denon used to have some processors, the AVD 2000 was a great box for DD, you could even connect power amps directly to it. Unfortunately they haven't done much since.

Come on Denon, how about a version of the 3802 sans all onboard amplification? I'm sure a lot of people out there would be interested.

I notice that this is quite an old thread - although still relevant. I am building up a system that uses the on board processing in my DVD player, running that to my quad pre-amps and then to my quad amps.

However, I would like to invest in a 'midrange' preamp/processor - but as has been talked about, they don't seem to exist. Have any new ones come onto that market since this thread began???? :confused:

If these are new, that is a bargain.

With the latest software loaded, these are great.

Price, well in the states it goes for around $1400, so i should imagine, the uk price about £1000.....

I was told a little while ago by Rotel Europe that the price would be about £1200. Stock was expected at the end of May.

I'm looking forward to some group tests in this price range - say the Cyrus AV5, Rotel RSP-1066 and the Myryad MDP500.

There must be a growing band of home cinema types who are thinking of moving from receivers to processor/power amp systems now that the market's maturing. If the Rotel 1066/1075 combination comes to about £2k, I'd be interested to see a comparison to the Denon 11SR.

Excellent! The Rotel RSP-1066 is just the thing I am looking for. I've been waiting for something like this to come along - I just hope it inspires other companies to get moving on separates like this, so we can get some healthy competition going!

I very much doubt that the RSP-1066 will drop from £1200 to £750!!

Rotel stuff usually holds its price for a while.

If £750 is your budget, look at their 5.1 processor, i think its the RSP-976 or 966, its on their site, and i think it goes for about £800.

I'm currently researching prices on the 1075 Amp to do the first part of my upgrade from a Yamaha DSP-A1.I'm planning on getting the 1075 now and use it with the Yamaha followed by the 1066 with a 1070 or 1080 to make up the 7 channels.

Yeah, guessing the prices will take a year or two to drop - still haven't got the cash at the moment so I'm not in a massive hurry, but I like to keep up with what is happening so when that magical moment happens and I have enough money I know what was good and can buy, knowing the history.

Buying another receiver would totally defeat the point of a separate pre/power amp setup. Currently I'm thinking about selling my Denon 3300 and buying a Yamaha E800 as a stop gap solution while I save for a Tag AV32R. Apparently it's a pretty good product with a decent power amp.

It's good to know that there are finally going to be some (perhaps) quality processors coming out for prices which aren't completely bank breaking.

To be honest I took an enjoy it now! while I can approach with my Rotel amps, rather than wait for a new processor at a reasonable price, I plumbed for a second hand great deal on a Citation 5.0 to make the most of the amps for the moment, it's only really 5.1 channel but this is real quality 5.1 and all I have room for.
(it also has 6-Axis, Jim Fosgate's previous award winning matrix, before Pro-logic2)

I use the Yamaha Pre amp also...(I am in the same boat waiting for mid-price PLII)

It's used in my system with 5 mono-bridged Rotel 850's.
Barring the lack of the aforementioned decoding it blows a lot of big integrated amp/receiver setups I have heard clean out of the water!!

Wouldn't it be great if Yamaha updated the E800 with the newer chip as used in the PLII capable amps/receivers?

That way we'd have PLII and be able to benefit from our power amps. Oh well, I guess we can dream...

What we all really want is our yamahas or denons to make us a machine with the processing of their better machines, but note of the power amps.

I'm fairly certain that at a price tag around £500......denon could make a mint selling us a machine with the 3802's processing. Perhaps we should start a petition and send it to some such companies.......
