Help grabbing a bit of a dvd for a powerpoint pres
Hi :-)
I'd like to grab a two minute clip from a film on a DVD that I am going to rent.
It is for use in a powerpoint presentation in a higher education environment ie not for money making etc. I'm told that this is quite legal and I have two questions:
1) is it legal?
2) how do I do it? Can you direct me to the right (freeware) software? I've got a good fast xp PC etc etc
nb - I've looked at the stick on how to back up movies but I don't think this would help me - though correct me if I'm wrong!

Use DVD Shrink (freeware)to extract the clip and import the resulting VOB into say TMPG DVD Author (trial version available) to create an mpg file which I think you can use in Powerpoint.

... but I thought that you could use a small portion of any copyright material for use in a non profit educational environment??? Again, I'm looking at 2 mins from a 140 minute film...

Copyright law isn't an easy read, but I think you'd need permission of the copyright owner to use it in a presentation. Always best to check (I'm not a lawyer)

If you own a copy of the original source material, IIRC you are allowed under UK Law to make backup copies but only one can be used at once. So you are probably okay to use it in this presentation.

Thing is he doesn't own a copy he's going to rent it!

Think that was US law that was claimed under not UK.

Bah humbug btw - the trial version of dvd shrink won't read from copy protected ...
Anyone recommend another?

Get TMPGEnc Plus, it will allow you to browse a .vob file and select only the scenes you want and will then output an .mpg file which you can play directly through DVD playback software or Media Player.
