Interpolation of low definition sources

I read that HD LCD & Plasma displays are very poor at interpolating conventional definition signals compared to HD CRT displays.

Can someone explain why they are inherently poorer?

CRT's are not fixed resolution displays, they use scan lines that can adjust to a number of resolutions. So they do not have to interpolate the incoming signal to fit the screen. Also, most plasma and LCD are inherinently progressive in nature so they need to deinterlace interlaced signals. Deinterlacing and scaling can be done very well, but it can also be done badly.

Like most things I guess the answer is Money - or lack of it

If your producing a High Resolution Display I guess you'll assume most end users will be using a High Definition source and there's no sense is specifying and spending big on a really high quality processor to scale and map low resolution signals to your high resolution Display.

Step forward the various manufactures who do offer very decent external processors that can be programmed to convert any number of disparate standard definition signals and output a pixel mapped signal to Input to your HD Display.

PS Not all HD Displays are bad at handling SD sources.
