Plasma or DLP, Which is best for HD?

After weeks of deliberating I can't make my mind up between the new 42" Panasonic 500 plasma, and the Sagem Axium 45DLP. Pricewise there's not really that much between the two. Anyone have strong opinions either way on which is the best for future HD broadcasts? Also which is the better option for the current SD broadcasts? Thanks for any help.

Both technologies have their pro's and con's. You need to make a list of them, and then decide which are more important to you. I won't waste my time and yours listing them now, because I'm sure you will find all you need in the relevant forums.

as far as SD goes i think the pv500 has been found to do the best job, the sagems are strong on the hd front, but for the money (well less) you could have the samsung sp50, this has had a few hd issues, but with the right tweeks is as good as the sagem and you get more screen and i think better looks. but if it was me id go for the pv500 with cabinet (can be found for £2200) over the sagem.

OK, I've got a bit more time now, so here goes.....

Plasma "Pro's":
Plasmas use similar phosphors to CRT, so colour rendition is excellent.
Plasmas have a very wide viewing angle.
Plasma screens do not flicker.
Plasma screens are very bright.
Plasmas have a good lifetime expectancy (30,000 to 60,000 hours)
Plasma screens are very thin panels.

Plasma "Con's":
Plasmas are quite expensive.
Plasmas can suffer from "screen burn"
Plasmas are very heavy.
Plasmas use a lot of power (about 350W for a 42" screen)

DLP "Pro's":
DLP tv's are quite cheap
DLP tv's don't suffer from screen burn
DLP tv's can give very good HD performance for a cheap tv.

DLP "Con's":
DLP TV's can be noisy (motor & fan inside)
DLP TV's have a lamp that can be expensive to replace
DLP TV's have a larger footprint than plasma
DLP tv's have a narrower viewing angle
DLP tv's suffer from the "rainbow effect"

Samsung (and some other companies) will shortly be releasing some 1920x1080 resolution DLP screens in america. I don't know if we'll see them here but, if we do, then that raises the possibility of a 1920x1080 screen, anything from 50" to 65", costing an amount of money that is comparable with what one would pay for a plasma no larger than 50" with a resolution of no more than 1366x768.

However, there's an awful lot of speculation in that assessment.

dont let people decide for you the best way go and demo the sets your self take films with you and make sure test every thing 1 thing i can say dlp tv are not very good with a analoug areial you do need a digital picture i have a toshiba dlp and let me tell u i also work for sony there isnt a plasma or lcd that sony makes comes near the picture quality of this set and these are only the 1st generation sets this is how the picture quality rates in these sets
1=crt
2=dlp
3=lcd
4=plasma

Plus Sony have launched (or are launching) their own flavour of LCOS (SXRD LCD) reflective LCD at 1920x1080 for their Qualia 70" RPTV in the US.

I saw one of these in the NY Sony Store in January and the picture quality blew every other RPTV I've ever seen out of the water.

I also saw quite a lot of direct view LCDs and Plasmas, and a couple of DLPs running HD signals yesterday at a BBC R&D Open Day - and the plasmas and LCDs looked MUCH better than previous demos I've seen. I think where they fall down is coping with poorer SD signals...

The sxrd qualia is coming out in december time,for the uk they are planning a 55" version this tv will set the standards

I've got a JVC LCoS unit and it's pretty good but I've been drooling over the Qualia 006 ever since I saw the first pictures.
