Building first HTPC - am I going over the top?

Hello,
I'm thinking of building a HTPC to replace my Hi-Fi, DVD player, Video recorder and also act as a library for all my CD's. I plan on using Windows Media Center 2005 but I'm unsure as to what components to use.

I will be using a 400W Qtechnology power supply and a 200GB SATA hard disk.

Does anyone have recommendations for CPU, memory, motherboard and graphics card?

I was thinking of a Athlon 64 3000 with 512mb RAM and a fanless gigabyte 6600GT graphics card - does this seem overkill for a pc that will not be used for gaming?

Thanks

Pete

CPU wise you do not need anything special. I would probably suggest you look at something like the Sempron 2500 and a socket A motherboard. These are due to stop being made soon so are available dead cheap.

You can get a decent nForce2 mobo with SATA support / onboard sound etc and a Sempron 2500 for under £100 new. You could also look at a second hand lot as I guess old XP2500 / Socket A mobo combos are going for nowt on ebay ??

I think the best idea is to get a maximum price you want to pay. Then you can start to think of components.

Depends what you want to do. If you're looking at upscaling DVD then that's about a decent spec.

My puter (see sig) runs @ 80-85% CPU when using ffdshow to scale to 1920x1080, which to be honest is probably fine for me, 28" JVC HDTV CRT so I'll now notice much in the way of quality improvements I don't think.

As I say depends if you're looking at scaling and stuff!

Yes I totally agree with Pinkprobegt. I'm using amd 3000xp plus ATI sapphire 9600xt.When I tried running the microsoft hi definition clips several months ago ( is it WMV high definition) they really did cane the processor. Some actually run at a full 100% processor and were sturreing visually as a result. Since then I've installed theatertek witg fddshow and I'd dread to think how those WMVHD would manage now. So IMHO if the future is HD wer'e gonna need more power Scotty!
