Gain Match in Power Amps
I am thinking of buying a 2-channel power amp (for music) to compliment my Sony STR-DB930.
However, when matching the gain of the power amp to the Sony, to get the same volume, does both the Sony and the power amp need to have gain mactching or just the new power amp??
Any help is most appreciated,
Stephen.

Only the power amp would need gain matching.
If you are going to power your fronts speakers soley from the new power amp gain matching isn't so much of a problem. This problem only arises when you start bi-amping with external power amps.

2 amps per speaker, one to drive the bass/mid driver, one to drive the tweeter.
In a stereo setup you would need then 4 channels of amplification, if you want to bi-amp your 5.1 setup you will need 10 channels (e.g. two 5-channel amps).

Oh, the speakers must support this, i.e. have 2 sets of input each (which are linked in a 'normal' setup using a metal plate or short cable).
Now take a guess what tri-amping means!? :D

Thanks Reiner,
I gues it is OK to power bi-amp'ed speakers (my mission 773e's) support this using the one amp.
For example, I have the 4 channel speaker cable, however it all comes from one amp at the moment, but it splits to drive the bass and tweeter units.
If I was going to move to a power-amp, I was just going to do the same again.

Stephenc: It sound like you have your Missions bi-wired at the moment. This is fine.

Hi Retro,
I knew their was a term that I couldn't remember this morning, bi-wired
One day I'll get all this, it used to be so easy, walking into Dixons and walking out with the kit which looked the coolest, now it's all demo's, web-reviews etc. etc.
Stephen. :D
