It's metal.
I also ordered a standard beige OEM 109 for use in a external enclosure and share it between computers.
It is recommended that the new 1.50 firmware gets installed. The silver ones come with 1.40.

The standard OEM 109 isn't suitable for a HCPC. I put a audio CD in it and made so much noise it was louder than the music. No doubt, the quiet mechanism of the silver one would be beneficial here.
It is quiet with DVD's though.

so can owners vouch for the quietness of this drive? My OEM DVR-108 is very loud when it spins up and remains so when playing a DVD. Love Pioneer drives so would like to replace it with one of these non-OEM 109's but only if it really is a quiet drive.
thanks

I have had a 109OEM and a NEC3520 DVD writer and no matter what software i tried i could never get them to not spin up really fast, tried Nero CD Speed, DVD Idle etc etc
But been testing the Pioneer DVR-109XLC Silver all day and with the software from Pioneer website it is 100% silent even for Data disks, it does not allow the drive to spin up fast whatever disk is inserted if set to Quiet mode
Its excellant

I cannot watch or listen to DVD's and CD's with the standard OEM 109. The disc still spins to fast that it is louder than the CD. I crossflashed the drive with the 109XLC firmware and now it is totally silent.

I can verify the drive is quiet in both DVD and CD operation.

Cheers mate - hopefully I'll get the sound issue sorted as reported on a recent thread, but other than that I don't think I could go back to a setup without the HTPC.
I have it connected wirelessly to my network upstairs using a 11g PCI card - as I download movies/episodes etc on my main PC upstairs, I stream them to the HTPC downstairs - I'm well happy with it so far.

I am using my 109 in an external enclosure on my PC. I also have a external hard drive which has DVD's on it. The PC is permantly connected to my projector and one click on my switchbox and the PC output goes from my monitor to my projector.
