SD, HD - What came before ?

From memory the UK upgraded from a black & white low def signal in the sixties (think early Steptoes & Dr Who's). Anybody know what spec it was e.g. resolution, less than 50hz? etc.

Also how many years did we have this spec ? Anyone remember how crap it was?
