On its end?

Is it possible to stand a Sky+ box on its end and operate it as normal?

Yes, as long as it gets adequate ventilation.

Don't move it whilst it's plugged in.

I would say no. An ordinary sky box yes, but not sky+.

I would have though the internal hard drive would not be happy spinning on its side, and it produce a lot of heat anyway.
Loads of Sky+ boxes have melted in the normal horizontal position so I reckon you'd be sending it to early grave on its side.

Well, one of my PC's in this office (the Acer) has a hard drive mounted on it's side in the case with no ill effects at all.

Where are you getting this information from ? I've never heard of Sky+ boxes melting ! I'm sure if this was a common occurrence, there would be lots of posts here about it, and there aren't

Steady on old chap!......
I could be wrong about the hard disc spinning on its side, but the heat IMO will be a problem.

There are loads of posts about failed hard discs in Sky+ boxes only a few months old. I have V1 and a V2 Sky+ and I, like many people on here, had a hard disc fail within 6 months on the V2 mainly caused by heat.

Sky updated the firmware about 12 months ago to make use of the fans more, probably to combat the numerous warranty claims they were being faced with, but it certainly has been a major problem in the past.

I'm just offering some friendly advice.

Your posting is pure conjecture. You don't know why the hard disk failed in your Sky+ box, and you don't know why Sky makes changes in their software. Sky has millions of customers, and because you and a handful of other people on these forums have had a hard disk fail, you're saying that it is a major problem.

Why should a hard disk get hotter on its side than it does horizontally ? It doesn't. Standing a Sky+ box on its end will block a few holes in the chassis - this won't matter, since there is a fan installed. HDD's routinely can get up to (and above) 50 degrees C in a PC - it's not a problem in PC's, so why are you alleging that it's a problem with Sky+ boxes ?

You don't have to agree with me but there are more friendly ways to go about it.
Just my opinion and I respect yours.

the only problem that could arise is if the hard drive is fairly old. The bearings in it are bedded in and by turning it on its side may cause premature failure, but would be very rare.
