Unhappy Sagem hd-45 connections??

Hi all,
Firstly pardon my ignorance as I am quite new to all this.
Basically I'm after some advice on connecting my equipment to my new Sagem Hd-45, and the settings I need to alter to optimise.
I have Freeview, xbox and a Samsung hd-945 dvd player.
I've tried the dvd player using the hdmi to dvi cable supplied with the Samsung and got poor results, I've read that to get the most out of the Sagem's on-board processing I need to use the lowest quality output from my dvd, is this true? Is it possible to connect my xbox using component as oppose to scart? (It is chipped) also, I get an on-screen frosting effect from my Humax 800t freeview box, I have this connected via scart too. Do I need to get superior leads or are my freebies ok?
Sorry about all the questions but If anyone out there can help me I would be very grateful.
Regards
Jason.

Actually, the Sagem is not very good with low quality signals. The on-board scaler has problems dealing with fast moving images so often produces a nasty banding/solarisation especially noticeable on skintones.

I would certainly consider getting better leads, freebies are generally pretty poor quality.

Use the DVI for DVD, and SCARTs for the XBox and Freeview receivers.

Thanks for the response, I have found that I get a better quality picture through scart as oppose to the hdmi-dvi cable, seems a bit pointles having a hd ready tv if I get better pictures through good old scart though
