Denon 3805 causing Subwoofer to rumble/pop

Advice needed desparately.

My subwoofer is rumbling and popping, even with no signal at all.

I've got a Velodyne SPL-1000 II, a Denon 3805 AV/R, B&W speakers, and other components that seem unrelated to my problem.

I've hooked up the sub directly to the subwoofer line out on the 3805 using a Monster sub specialty RCA cable. The cable goes into the sub in the single input line in jack.

I've set the internal crossover to OFF and set the 3805 crossover frequency to 120Hz.

The speaker configuration setup is Subwoofer YES and it doesn't matter (for this problem) whether the other speakers are all set to SMALL or the fronts are set to LARGE and others to SMALL.

I've tried both the LFE and LFE+Main settings on Subwoofer setup.

I tried turning off the Denon and it still causes the rubbling (popping), only when the cable is physically removed does it stop.

Also, the kicker to the problem is that it is INTERMITTENT. It doesn't happen until things have warmed up. When I turn off the sub and try again later it may or may NOT rumble again.

When rumbling or not rumbling the sub seems to be working otherwise.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks,

Ed

Are you sure it's not the Sub itself that's the problem? Do you have everything plugged into an extension socket by any chance? Might be worth plugging the sub in somewhere else just in case it's a weird electrical problem. Have you also tried another cable from the Amp to the Sub?

Another option to eliminate the Sub and/or the Amp is to try it on another Amp at a friends maybe? If the situation repeats itself then it's the Sub, if it doesn't then it would unfortunately point to the Amp but I find it strange that the Sub pops with the Amp switched OFF.

I'm going to try a new cable AND a ground loop isolator from Radio Shack today but I don't really have a way to test the amp or the sub separately as I don't have access to another 5.1 amp nor another sub.

Also of concern to me is that the Sub still pops when the amp is off, although removing the cable stops the noise. I tried multiple different AC plug-in scenarios but no difference until the cable is removed or the sub turned off.

Thanks,

Ed

Denon 3802 Same Issue

I have the denon 3802, with an advent subwoofer and bose acoustimass speakers. Didn't like the bass from the bose, so I bought a powered sub.
RG6 (coax) from receiver to sub. clean power on both.

I don't have the rumbling, but I do have the popping. Even when the receiver is set to mute! I thought (before it was noticed with the mute on) that it was the crossover, and tried adjusting on both the sub and the receiver. thought it was the volume on the sub. Nothing seems to work.

I want to return the sub, but if it is a problem with the receiver than that doesn't make any sense. Thoughts? Resolutions?

I had a similar problem and it wasn't the amp, it was caused by an earth loop. It would even do it with the amp plugged into the mains but turned off! I modded my cable by adding a resistor to the screen of the sub lead, but you might find the kit mentioned above an easier option. If your sub has an 'earth lift' switch on it, try that instead.

Help! I am getting the exact same problem with my Denon 2808 with a REL T1 subwoofer. Exactly the same problem. Anyone knows if Ed was able to solve this? PLEASE HELP.

First and foremost, don't assume the amp is at fault. Check all cables, test them mechanically to ensure all connections are sound. I use a splitter and have to be careful not to disturb it as it can cause a buzz but the problem lies with cables.

Re: Denon 3805 causing Subwoofer to rumble/pop

Have you got the sub and amp plugged into the same power strip? If not please try this first

Is the noise caused by heating thermostats, nearby mobile phones, flourecent lamp starters? Any wall-wart type power supplies hanging around the sub or it's wiring?

If the noise stops with the cable out is that out from the sub end or out from the amp end ? Difference? cable RF pick up if it continues with amp end unplugged only

Is the noise when the amp is off still present if the amp is REALLY off (main switch not standby).

Worth noting - - as a test you can feed the sub from any phono source on a totally separate cd/dvd/tv player etc - will only do bass but should be ok to test (caution use low volume/gain on volume setting on sub !!!!). try this with a different lead too.

In reverse you can connect any PC type amplified speaker or a cassette deck/recorder etc to the sub out on the amp. Obvioulsly if the rumble is at 15Hz this will not help but above 50 or 100Hz the record level needles should twitch or the speaker make some sort of noise if the amp is truly outputting the noise you hear.

Highest probability, local RF interference or a ground loop/ poor ground connection on plug or amp

Like with the original poster, the rumbling/popping sound from the subwoofer only happens when things have heated up. My whole system is connected to a grounded line conditioner/ powerstrip. I cannot predict when the problem will occur and is intermittent. But when it does, you can feel the subwoofer cone throbbing or moving if you physically touch it. Though it disappears when I disconnect the subwoofer cable from the receiver side or when the cable is connected but the amp if disconnected from the powersource (not standbye).

I tried resetting the Denon 2808 and it was a temporary quick fix. After 2 dvd's, problem is back again.

Thanks for the help guys.

I've tried Ixos, Monster, and Acoustic Research subwoofer cables. Didn't do much to the problem. I also don't use a splitter and its a direct rca to rca connection.
