What i should have also asked can it do this without lots of messing around as i am not very pc savvy and are currently having probs with xlobby.
Yes it can, this is what the 'My Movies' plug in is used for, you can rip the DVD to your hard drive and keep the ripped vobs/iso in separate folders, one folder per film...My Movies can then display them as DVD cover thumbnails, give info about the actors, stream trailers from the 'net and play the film - it is vey cool :smashin:

I think we may be talking at cross purposes here.... I just use the DVD Rom in the HTPC, With My Movies you can either catalogue the movie that is on DVD, and when you click to play it tells you to put it in the DVD drive.... or you can rip the DVD to your hard drive and when you tell My Movies to play it - it just does!
Sorry, don't know what xlobby is.

I want to rip all of my films to the hard drive and then have them play back seamlesly with just a click on the image with no further messing around with file types in players etc, can mce do this ? Or do i have to fiddle around endlessly to get it to work ( not very wife friendly)
Yes it can do this via the 'My Movies' plug in see here (http://www.binnerup.dk/mce/mymovies.htm) your wife will love it!

Q. How do I play DVDs from Hard disk?
A. Create a directory called VIDEO_TS (all upper case) in "MOVIE TITLE" directory and put all of the vob, ifo and bup files in it. When choosing the folder for video playback, select the "movie title" folder.
I tried this technique only two days ago and it works like a charm. Very easy to do.
