View Full Version : Help. Progressive component out from Denon 2910 not working!

Hey folks.
I've recently bought a multi-region modified Denon 2910 DVD player (from SuperFi), but I have a problem with it.
When switching to progressive scan I don't get a picture at all. Normal interlaced works fine, but not progressive. The projector reports an output but doesn't display anything.
This is outputting to an Optoma Themescene H30A projector using a 10m Profigold component cable.
I've heard mention somewhere that the multi-region hack might disable progressive component output, does this sound correct?
Can anyone help me? :lease:
At worst I'd like to disable this multi-region hack to get progressive working, if this is in fact the problem I'm experiencing.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Flib.

Might be asking the obvious here but have you enabled yuv in the players menu.If not it must be done before connecting component cables ie scart.

Hi.
Thanks for the quick reply.
I haven't seen an option in the system menu of the player for YUV, and I've read through the manual and haven't noticed an option like this.
I have just disconnected the Scart cable, leaving an s-video cable and component cable in (both going to the projector).
I've selected progressive scan on the dvd player, setting the scart out to video instead of rgb, and chosen component on the projector.
When switching over to component, the projector displays:
"Analog YPbPr 2
720 x 480 / 60 hz
Mode: 51"
- when in region 1 NTSC mode
- screen is solid black
"Component Video 2
YUV 50 hertz"
- when in region 2 PAL mode
- screen is black with a darker black bar down the middle and some broken white lines towards the bottom of the picture
Any other ideas? :)

Flib.

Hi
Sorry can't really help as I have the same problem! Using a Sharp projector & no picture from prog scan! I was interested to read that you had heard it was possibly a problem linked to multi-region Denon's as this is what mine is, not hear this before. I would be interested if anyone could confirm this, and does anyone know if the latest firmware update would solve this?
On a note I posted I was advised to try & set the DVD to NTSC & not PAL or multi as sometimes it only works on NTSC. I was also told to make sure the digital output was turned off. I guess you probably have tried both; I did & still no picture!
I have emailed both Sharp & Denon about this; I'll let you know the outcome

Hi Guys
Just bought a 2910 and have spent an extremely frustrating weekend with the same problems - no progressive scan via component or DVI (into an H57)! I tried turning various things on and off in different orders but nothing. I too was advised that it may be to do with the MR upgrade. Am hot footing it back to Creative Audio tomorrow to ask them what the hell is going on ........

Progressive works fine on mine, though it's not MR hacked. If MR hacking is the common denominator of all 3 problems posted above (obviously it's not the display device) then this could be the cause of the problem.

Is there a way of undo'ing the multi-region hack?
I'd be prepared to lose multi-region ability to get back progressive scan (as I have MR on my panny DVD recorder).

Sorry if this is a silly question but does anyone know why the MR hack would cause the progessive scan to stop working?

My 2910 is MR hacked and from Creative Audio. My ProgScan works great, no probs at all. I did get some picture break up, though, but since i upgraded it to firmware 8 its been fine.
Have you tried updating the firmware?

Hi,
I just bought my 2910 from Super-fi yesterday. It has the MR hack as well. I just hooked it up last night and can't get prog scan to give me a picture. I just bought my DVI cable today and will try it tonight.
I will also update the firmware as suggested. Can anyone confirm if this wipes out the MR hack?
Thanks very much in advance.

Hi guys.
A Superfi courier picked up my MR modified 2910 yesterdy and phoned me today to say they have shipped me a replacement 2910, but not MR modified (at my request).
I figured that I'd rather lose the MR hack if it was going to cause any problems at all, especially as I'm replacing what's left of my old R1 titles with R2 titles now anyway.
If I could get hold of a MR firmware upgrade AND a non-MR firmware then I might be tempted to upgrade to MR, backing out to non-MR if the outputs still don't all work perfectly.
I'll let you know if everything works when this new player turns up tomorrow.

I found the MR firmware in a seperate thread (easy to find)
http://www.dexk.btinternet.co.uk/DVD-2910_6720-8_codefree.zip
Thanks to dex (and others) for posting it.
I have not tried it yet, but it seems to work for various problems folks are having.

Hi all
Thought you might be interested in the following I've recieved from Denon.
Has your player been multi-regioned?? We have had situation where the firmware can cause compatibility issues. Please can you provide me with the serial number of your player and the place of purchase so I can check for any updates that we can provide you with via the dealer?
I have emailed them back & I will keep you posted. Looks like the MR hack is the problem, hopefully a firmware update will solve this, I have too many R1 discs to go for a R2 machine!

As you know, I could not get the component signal to work on my 2910. I installed my DVI cable last night and it worked fine. Plugged in and I was up and running no problems. I don't know why the component didn't work, but DVI did fine.
I checked my firmware last night and confirmed it was version 4 and had the MR hack installed by SuperFi earlier this week.
This morning I rolled the dice and upgraded the firmware to the MR version 8 and everything still works fine through DVI. I will try to hook up the component again just to see if it works. I did confirm my DVD's for both regions 1 & 2 worked fine this morning after the firmware update.
The picture quality is great, but I still need to make some tweaks to get it just right.
I'm not sure if this helps anyone, but I thought I'd post my results.

GG, i'd be interested in knowing if the new multi-region firmware has fixed your component progressive problem.
If so I might think of installing that firmware. Is it the firmware available on these forums? Could you tell us the firmware version number? Thanks.

See message 13 above for the link to the firmware. It is version 8.
My daughter got sick yesterday so I didn't have a chance to try the component hookup yet. Sorry.
I'll try tomorrow.

Flib,
Now I'm sick. I will certainly test the component cables tomorrow as I'll surely be home all day. I'll post my results immediately. I'm sorry to keep you waiting on this.

Well I finally got reply from Denon. They were willing to send a firmware update to my retailer but only for R2. As this was no good last night I decided to use the update available on-line & thought you may be interested in the results.
I must say I was a little concerned about using the firmware update but all worked like a dream, no problems at all. Now the results!
Prog scan is now working on both R1&2 :)> looks very impressive too. Not checked out the audio side but SACD had worked fine anyway.
But it has not solved the problem with the HDMI/DVI output.
Basically if I use 480P/576P the picture is fine but if I get the Denon to upscale to 720P or 1080I I get a green distorted image. The projector (SharpXV-Z200E) shows 720P or 1080I. I read in a recent review that this projector is HDCP compliant so this shouldn't be the problem, anyway why would I get an image at 480P/576P? I wondered if it was the cable (Supra HDMI>DVI). It's an 8m cable & Supra claim these should be OK up to 10m. Would an adaptor to go DVI>DVI make a difference?
If anyone has any ideas would appreciate some feedback.

Are you getting the green screen with only PAL movies?
Coz i was reading in the 2910 manual, that if upping your player to the 720 image, u need to set the player to NTSC only. Or did i read it wrong?
Maybe someone could clear that up for me?
Cheers!

Hi John-D
Tried that tonight but still the same! Only getting a picture on 480P/576P.

Hi guys,
anything new regarding this issue? Yesterday I've tried to plug my TV with Denon 1910 through DVI-D cabel, but TV had no signal. According to the manuals both (player and TV) are HDCP compliant. Denon is Multiregion. I have too many dvds from Region 1,2,3 and 4 to give up this feature.

Can anyone help me find out which version of firmware I have?
I've tried using the trick I've seen in other threads - power off, hold the play and on/off buttons, turn back on, press 3,2,6,5 and the menu button, but it doesnt work for me!
If anyone could take me through it I would be very much obliged!

I've had the same problem on a recently purchased 2910. I had a demonstration at Sevenoaks in Peterborough of a region 2 player and the progressive outputted ok. They then modified the player with their upgrade disc, but when I tried the player in my system it would only output on the interlaced
setting. It transpired that Sevenoaks had used an early version upgrade disc. They aquired the latest version from Denon, reprogrammed the player, and now everything works ok.Region 1&2 and progressive working fine
However, I think these dealers should make sure they use the latest firmware, because mine was'nt even aware of it until they contacted Denon with the problem.
Thanks everybody who contributed to this thread. had the same problem with my multi-region 2910. Downloaded the new Firmware and everything now perfect.
me too.......no PS over component with the version 4 MR firmware.....version 8 works just fine

I just purchased the 2910 and was having the same no-output on prog component issue. I thought of checking here and it seems that I have cracked it. I just burned the CD and will try it out tonight.
Thanks to all for the help. This is to let you know that we continue to benefit from this thread
