Hypocritical Forums
While we all get told we are not able to provide links to Sonel or KTVision to get their leads that remove Macrovision, this site is quite happy to take cash for adverts that advertise:"COPY DVD'S,PS2 GAMES-copy protection,no problem".
I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for it,but it does seem a bit hypocritical.
I know. Its going to be:"The ads are not done by us".
But if you are worried about the legal ramifications of linking to the other sites, surely an ad carries the same problem.
Of course, there are many sites that don't get paranoid about it and allow the links for the devices that do have a legitimate use........on rare occasions

I know what you mean....SDi bypasses all copy protection yet is freely discussed and a any post reffering to a BUG lead or where to buy one is deleted. A hard casll and i like thre forums hardline on piracy but same rules should apply to advertisers as posters...
And why do we have all these odd google adds?

Notice the ads' sites all have extensive warnings against using the filter cables for getting round copyright protection. Most of the forum posts suggesting the use of these cables don't, and in some cases have openly encouraged their use for this purpose. Therein lies the difference.

phelings, if you don't like the forum policies, would you like me to remove your membership? I'm sure you would prefer other less 'hypocritical' forums to visit?
Just let me know as my finger is hovering over the delete button.
Alternatively if you think running and moderatng a forum is easy, by all means go away and have a go yourself.
The AV Forums can't be seen to promote piracy and any threads which might be perceived as doing that will get removed at the discretion of the moderators under instruction from myself. If there is discussion to be had on a better way to handle the problem, I am open to ideas. But hurling words like 'hypocritical' just winds me up.
If I could detect those people who block adverts, I would completely block their access to the forums.
The forums would not exist if everyone blocked adverts. It's as simple as that. Or rather they would not be free to use. How about a membership fee?
With regard to advertising in general, I try to ensure as much as possible that the adverts are relevant and even of interest. I.e. they draw your attention to bargains and places to pick those bargains up. The Google ads may stray from this a bit but it's not a problem.
So please do not block the adverts. The bandwidth cost is negligable (we stictly limit their size to 20k), their content is usually helpful/useful, and you are supporting the AV Forums by allowing them, clicking them and using the services of the sponsors.
By blocking the adverts you are effectively sticking two fingers up at the AV Forums.

LOL Google is superb all 4 ads under this thread are advertising macrovision removers..
http://www.ktvision.com/
http://www.shopgenie.co.uk/search/qu...tnerid=8909723
http://www.ukdvdr.co.uk/
http://home.cfl.rr.com/filter/
LOL Stu i am sorry but this takes the WeeWee mate how can you say cant be seen to promote piracy and have these "keyword" Adverts running, doing just that????
........I am all for forum sponsors and not blocking them even clicking on them and using their sites for links to info pictures etc. And without adds no servers and no forum so i dont have an issue with the adds but in this case "hypocritcal" does seem appropriate

OK so if i link to one of the Adverts that the forum advertises and actively promotes, to a Macrovision removing lead like the ones in my post above will it be deleted.
Example in context
Quote:
|
my kids have a load of cartoon VHS Tape Bob the builder etc can i copy them to DVD recorder so they can watch them on my new plasma??
|
Is the post above allowed?
advert wording was this:
Quote:
Macro vision filter
Solve macro vision related issues which may affect your DVD recorder
Macrovision Decoder

certainly won't be apologising. Not only is there no link to show its been moved, the administrator get all arsey about and threatens to delete me.I don't normally resort to censorable stuff but what a ****er.
I never said that moderating a forum was easy. You have just got uppity because I pointed out what a bunch of hypocrites you are.
So,you can't be seen to be promoting piracy-well what the hells the bloody advert then.Oh,I forgot,it gives you cash so thats ok.
As you will note,I rarely post on here anymore anyway.
Feels like [disrespectful comment removed by admin] The DVD Forums are running it.
I posted in the DVDR section because thats where I saw the ad.Seems a logical link.
I don't block the adverts, but as posted above, you have a go when we linked to Sonel etc,but if we post a link to one of your own adverts it would add up to the same.
I know terms like"hypocritical" wind you up-why do you think I posted it?
All I wanted was an explanation ,which you have given, and it does not really stand up at all.
When you move threads you normally add a "moved" reminder. Why not this time?

Stony ground, phelings, unfortunately. Perhaps we can now recognise the difference between an 'Administrator' and a 'Moderator'. The diagnosis hinges on the use of the word "Whatever"...
Let's end it here so we can continue the minor scuffles elsewhere...

Oh so you've fallen out with Colin, to, eh? Ever thought it might be you?
Let me make it clearer. It's you.

No, no, no, mate. The advice given in the book 'how to win friends and influence people' should be *followed*.
F o l l o w e d.
You don't do the opposite.
I've deleted your other thread because it is irrelevant since I didn't delete this thread. I moved this thread to the appropriate forum - feedback.
Thanks very much for the insult, phelings.
What exactly do you want?
Presumably it's a relaxation of the piracy rules (since what adverts are placed on the AV Forums is really none of your business).
Let's have a quick think about the best way to get what you want.
Would it be to put forward a sensible, reasonable, rational argument to provoke intelligent debate?
Or would it be to call the guy who owns the site a ****er?
mmmmm tricky one.
Here's my simple answer. If you don't like it, don't visit the AV Forums.
Christ on a bike, it's not like it's really very important in the grand scheme of things, is it?

Phelings,
I note that you've got form for being banned for flouting forum rules and discussing macrovision. It's not like people don't know about how to get past it; you're not being especially clever or transferring 'forbidden knowledge' to anyone. We just can't discuss it here. You're not the one who'd face a lawsuit. Get over it mate.
Mike.

Maybe it's just me - but I can see quite a substantial difference between allowing posts providing advice/assistance/direct links to methods that circumvent copy protection and basic advertising links.
If you allow the former you:
a) risk the forum, or a sub-forum, becoming well known for piracy which would impact upon the good name of the forums.
b) run the risk of legal action by actively hosting illicit advice - and remember all posts are archived and searchable for many years. By contrast adverts are not archived and always point towards a company/individual who can be held accountable (i.e. it's not the forum recommending something).

Not being funny Phelings but you would get further when making comments like this if you were slightly less confrontational.
